Michigan's Minimum Wages Increases to $9.25

Effective Jan. 1, 2018 the minimum wage rate in Michigan has increased to $9.25. According to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, the increase is the final scheduled increase provided by the Workforce Opportunity Wage Act of 2014.

As of Sept. 1, 2014 the minimum wage was $8.15, it was raised to $8.50 in January 2016 and again to $8.90 in January of 2017. Several groups have advocated to increase the minimum wage, including a case for $12 an hour by 2022. Some businesses have proactively raised their wages to stay competitive and foster talent. Comerica Bank and Fifth Third Bancorp have vowed to raise their minimum wage to $15 an hour as a result of the newly passed federal tax reform.

Under current law, no future adjustments to minimum wage can exceed 3.5 percent. Training wage remains at $4.25 during the first 90 days of employment for new employees age 16-19, employees who are tipped may be paid 38 percent of Michigan’s minimum wage.
