WHY IS HAVING AN M&A STRATEGY IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESS OWNERS? HOW CAN BUSINESS OWNERS DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT AN EFFECTIVE ACQUISITION STRATEGY?

WHY IS HAVING AN M&A STRATEGY IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESS OWNERS? HOW CAN BUSINESS OWNERS DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT AN EFFECTIVE ACQUISITION STRATEGY?

Business owners should have an “always on” M&A strategy, particularly focused on strategic acquisitions, as strategic acquisitions are one of the most efficient ways to achieve growth. Companies that opportunistically execute strategic acquisitions, especially during market uncertainty (e.g., COVID-19) typically outperform their competitors and are able to outmaneuver said market uncertainty. According to a recent Accenture study, companies in the S&P 500 that completed acquisitions during an economic downturn had a 22% higher return than their sector average, and companies that acquired during epidemic outbreaks yielded a 30% higher return

Business owners should utilize a systematic approach when developing a strategic acquisition strategy, which should start by looking inward (i.e., conducting a self-assessment of your business), followed by a comprehensive market assessment (e.g., market trends, competitive analysis, etc.). This assessment should outline your company’s (i) strengths and weaknesses, (ii) opportunities and threats, (iii) growth objectives (e.g., expand market share, enhance product/service offerings, reach new end-markets, etc.), and (iv) a competitive analysis of your peers. This will serve as the framework to help your company develop its “Acquisition Playbook”

Your “Acquisition Playbook” should outline the ideal (i) characteristics of potential acquisition targets, (ii) size/type of transactions your company is willing to consider, (iii) number of transactions your company needs to complete in order to meet its growth objectives, and the (iv) general transaction/implementation timeline

How do I put this playbook to use? UHY Corporate Finance can be a beneficial resource if you are contemplating strategic acquisitions.
