OUR CLIENT’S NEED
Marlene Beach, audit and assurance principal, received a request from Matrix Human Services (Matrix) to conduct an internal control analysis. “I was excited for the opportunity to work with an organization that advocates for and serves the most vulnerable in the metropolitan Detroit community and empowers individuals and families to enhance the quality of their lives and achieve self-sufficiency,” said Marlene.
Matrix has served the Detroit community and surrounding areas for well over 100 years. The League of Catholic Women led the way in 1906 with a vision and mission to fight poverty. Today their mission remains the same as they continue to touch hearts and change lives in the community. With programs at more than 30 locations, Matrix Human Services serves more than 20,000 individuals and families each year.
As Marlene began working on the examination of the effectiveness of the organization's system of internal controls, there was quite a bit of work that needed to be completed to safeguard assets, detect and prevent fraud, and get Matrix ready for their annual audit. Marlene also brought in UHY’s single audit specialist, Yllka Manushi, to assist in helping Matrix prepare for their single audit.
What made matters more difficult was turnover in the leadership and staff ranks that left the accounting department shorthanded. Marlene temporarily replaced the Controller position until UHY’s Resource Solution team was able to identify Cathy Calvano as the organization’s permanent replacement. Matrix also needed to fill the CFO position and approached Marlene to see if Cathy Calvano would be able to fill the CFO’s role. Marlene gave Cathy a glowing recommendation and had full confidence in her ability.
Cathy Calvano became the Chief Financial Officer at Matrix and she has been a great fit. “Cathy has been an unbelievable find on UHY’s part and has been more than ever could have been expected”, said Brad Coulter, President & CEO of Matrix. “With $50 million in annual revenue, Matrix is an extremely complex organization managing over 60 grants with numerous federal, state and foundation reporting requirements. Cathy quickly came in and took charge of our accounting department and gave us statements we can rely on. More importantly she understands the story behind the numbers and is a true thought leader for the organization.”
Cathy provides effective day to day operations of the accounting department, coordinates meetings with the various grant managers, prepares and administers budgets and is producing timely, accurate monthly financial reports. As a result, the annual audit is expected to be completed well in advance of previous years’ schedules. Matrix’s board and management are receiving accurate reports and the organization can effectively plan for the future.
