Digital transformation was a necessity for companies whose workforce transitioned to remote over the pandemic. With that initial hurdle cleared, it may seem simple to integrate new technology into current workflow, but it is important to consider the new challenges presented with a scattered workforce.
Cindy Hannafey, a Managing Director at UHY Consulting, noted it can be more challenging to conduct process workshops or do requirements gathering when remote collaboration is the only option. That comes alongside the difficulties in keeping individual or group attention during this period of time.
In order to approach these challenges, Hannafey shared some of her recommendations to keep digital transformation moving without losing ground in implementation. She suggested extending user acceptance testing and parallel testing to allow more time for team integration and fixes. Another suggestion was taking time with training programs to make sure they include the vetting of system access, security, and provisioning prior to remote training for the workforce.
Robust communication plans with target audiences, dates, and messaging are key, said Hannafey. While video calls are the most engaging, daily or frequent communication keeps initiatives front and center. She recommends using an instant messaging or communication platform to enable frequent communication. Hannafey advises breaking up day- and week-long workshops into more targeted virtual workshops to help reduce disruption. As the preferences on engagement style varies from individual, Hannafey recommends, "Be[ing] flexible, open, and agreeable to other ways to approach engagement."
