How UHY Leverages Its Connections at Local Colleges to Find Talent

The war for talent is happening in almost every industry, but for accounting firms, college recruiting can be a vital part of circumventing that struggle.

UHY is the Albany area's largest accounting firm with a partnership with Siena College that dates back almost 75 years. The college hosts one of the area's largest accounting programs, making it a prime target for recruitment. Office Managing Partner Howard Foote said the international firm is leaning into its local college connections to tap directly into future accounting talent.

Part of this is by placing partners in adjunct positions at colleges, sponsoring scholarships and creating class electives, and the other part is in building name recognition. In February, UHY secured the naming rights for the Alumni Recreation Center at Siena College to rename the building to the UHY Center.

"In the last eight years, our regional CEO has had a generational perspective on recruitment, retention and promotion which has focused the firm way ahead of this war on talent that we’re facing now," Foote said. "He's highlighted and prepared us for a recruitment process that uses colleges and universities and speed to the hiring approach. That has made us prepared."
