Over 20 employees from UHY LLP, certified public accountants, in conjunction with UHY Cares, the firm’s nonprofit 501c3 organization, teamed up with others from Citizens Bank to teach the Junior Achievement Program to over 400 students from kindergarten to fifth grade at the Academy of Warren. The Academy of Warren represents a collaborative community of teachers, school administrators and the Parent Advisory Board (PAB), all with a common goal of seeing the students succeed and creating  “worlds of opportunity” for each student.


All participants went through mandatory training and worked extensively to ensure that the event was a success. Volunteers were paired off and assigned a classroom. Students took part in a variety of activities and learned various skills such as: identifying differences in family, defining money and the importance of saving it, basic functions of a business, roles of government at local and national levels, and learning about themselves.


Not only did the volunteers teach lesson plans for an entire school day, but they also spent a lot of time preparing the curriculum and materials. It was an exhausting but rewarding experience for volunteers from both organizations. “Making a difference in the lives of children at the Academy of Warren and the people of local communities is what UHY Cares is all about”, said Amy Pecha, senior human resources generalist at UHY LLP and Cares volunteer, who also coordinated of the event. “I’m grateful we’re given the opportunity to volunteer at such worthy events and work with such a great organization in the Junior Achievement Program.” 


The Junior Achievement Program of Southeastern Michigan provides critical educational programs to students in Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Saint Clair, Shiawassee, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Chartered in 1949, JA has linked students, volunteers and supporters for over 60 years touching the lives of more than 1.5 million young people.
