Governor Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity have awarded $8 million to the Michigan State AFL-CIO Workforce Development Institute to support the Michigan Statewide Pre-apprenticeship “Ready for Construction” Program (MiSPARC).
MiSPARC will connect more than 600 unemployed and underemployed Michigan residents to opportunities within the building trades and transportation sectors of the construction industry. The program will provide participants training that will help them achieve employment, with priority given to unemployed, underemployed, low-income minorities and women who have historically been underserved through prior registered apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs.
This initiative will diversify and expand the construction talent pool and increase meaningful opportunities that will have a real impact on workers, families and businesses.
This critical training will increase the number of skilled workers in the industry, helping to close the skills gaps, and enable the state to make much needed infrastructure progress to accelerate its economic growth.
